The Concept
The starting point for this piece came from McLaren MSO. After sharing my Podium Premiere painting, McLaren got in touch and asked me to create something special for a VIP event in Dubai, celebrating their Formula 1 season alongside some of their bespoke MSO creations.
This was a chance to create a unique piece connected to McLaren, Dubai and a major moment in Formula 1 history. With the event fast approaching, the painting had to be completed, crated, shipped and finished live in Dubai, adding a real sense of energy to the whole project.
The piece captures Lando Norris in the moment he became Formula 1 World Champion, with his hands together as he looks to the sky. For the background, I wanted to blend my abstract sweeping forms with inspiration from Lando’s iconic helmet design. With the piece being unveiled in Dubai, it felt right to use a reflective gold background to celebrate the championship and give the painting a real sense of celebration and emotion.
A painting that changes with its surroundings
The reflective gold surface catches the light around it, giving the piece a different character depending on where it is viewed.
The Painting
The painting is built around a reflective gold background, chosen to celebrate the championship and the piece being unveiled in Dubai. Within the background, I also wanted to bring in elements inspired by Lando’s iconic helmet design, blending them with my own abstract sweeping forms. It felt like the right choice for the piece, not just visually, but for the story behind it.
What made the surface even more special was how it reacted to its surroundings. During the event, the colours of the McLaren cars and the surrounding environment began reflecting into the gold, shifting the colour depending on the light. It was one of those moments you could not have planned, but it added something really special to the finished painting.
I wanted to capture the emotion and feeling of the moment above everything else. I chose the close portrait composition to make the painting feel more intimate, focusing on Lando at the point when everything he had worked towards had finally become real.
This piece was an honour to create in collaboration with McLaren MSO, and will always stand out as one of the most special pieces created.
