The Concept
In this piece, I wanted to create one of the most powerful portraits I had ever painted. The commission gave me the perfect subject to do exactly that.
The client chose the race and the helmet, both holding a personal significance to them. Beyond that, they gave me absolute freedom to create something truly special, which is the greatest brief any artist can receive.
From the start, the concept was centred on a strong portrait of Sir Lewis Hamilton. I spent a great deal of time composing and balancing the form and figure within the canvas, working through multiple ideas and sweeping forms, searching for that special concept. Maximum dramatic effect was the goal; a strong composition is always the building block for achieving that.
I had a last-minute change of heart about painting the original. Something about the final concept sketch was drawing my eye up and away from the portrait, pulling focus in the wrong direction. I am always conscious of how the viewer perceives and moves through my work. The abstract forms should create a subconscious, natural motion that guides rather than distracts. Changing the form's direction brought everything back to Lewis, anchoring the composition exactly where it needed to be.
The decision to pull Hamilton and Ferrari together through a deep red world felt right from the very beginning. Tying them together in colour, light and shadow, and giving the piece the cinematic intensity it deserved.
The emotion in this piece speaks louder than any detail.
From the deep mottled reds to the cinematic light falling across Hamilton's helmet, every element was built to create a powerful presence.
The Painting
I created this piece in oil on a 1 x 1 metre stretched canvas. The square canvas ratio is one of my favourite formats, offering a powerful, balanced, and confident placement on any wall.
The red world was the foundation of everything. I spent many hours mixing and blending the background tones, working through the deep, mottled reds to create a dramatic atmosphere inspired by the iconic Ferrari palette. These tones bleed seamlessly into Hamilton and the livery, tying the man and the team together across the entire canvas.
Light and shadow were used deliberately throughout, pulling Lewis in and out of the abstract world around him and giving the piece a cinematic intensity. The composition has a real tension to it, dramatic and focused, with every element working to keep the viewer's eye exactly where it needs to be.
The helmet was a huge focus. I spent a long time getting every element right, working with fine microbrushes to bring the detail to life. Up close, you will find specs of blue, red and green glitter woven into the design, details that most people won't notice straight away, but that for me make all the difference.
This is one of the most powerful portraits in the collection. If you would like to find out more, or discuss the process behind this piece, please get in touch.
