Lando
Norris
Turning Point
The Concept
In this piece, I wanted to capture a key moment in Lando Norris's world championship fight. Him standing on the car in a triumphant win at the Mexico City Grand Prix, the crowd rising behind him in a moment that would become his championship turning point.
The commission came from a client who had felt the significance of that race in real time. They reached out shortly after, wanting to capture the emotion of the moment and transport themselves back to that point in time in the piece.
From the start, I knew the piece needed real energy and power. A McLaren-inspired orange felt like the natural direction, bold and fitting for the moment. I also planned to introduce sweeping white abstract forms flowing through the piece, knowing these would add motion and contrast within the composition. The intention was to place Lando firmly at the centre, giving the moment the space and focus it deserved, and drawing the viewer into the composition.
This concept sketch marked the first iteration of the composition, with a later, more detailed drawing to follow.
There’s power in colour
My choice and use of colour brought an energy to the piece that few can, and you can feel it in the room.
The Painting
This piece was a commission, created in close collaboration with the client to bring this turning point of a race to life on canvas.
I created this piece in oil on a 1 x 1 metre stretched canvas. The square canvas ratio is one of my favourite formats, offering a powerful, balanced, and confident placement on any wall.
The orange palette drives the energy of the piece from the first moment you see it. I originally painted the background with more detail, but it wasn't working with the depth of the composition. The decision to pull it back and blur the scene behind Lando was a late one, but the right one. You still get the atmosphere and feel of the crowd without it competing for focus. The sweeping white abstract forms bring motion into the painting, guiding the viewer through the scene and reinforcing the story of the moment.
Lando himself took a great deal of the brushwork, working with fine microbrushes to bring to life the detail of his helmet and suit. His helmet was a particular highlight, blending bright yellows and greens to bring one of the most iconic and colourful helmets in the paddock to life on canvas.
The original is sold. Reproductions and embellished canvases are available. If you would like to find out more or discuss the process behind this piece, please get in touch.
