Mansell x Senna
Taxi Home
The Concept
In this piece, I wanted to capture Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna on their way back to the pits following the 1991 British Grand Prix. It is a rare moment that shows how, although rivalry can drive fierce competition, there is still mutual respect and a shared passion for the sport.
Each painting begins with an idea. A concept that forms the foundation of the final piece. When I begin developing an idea, I focus on creating a strong composition through line, structure, and movement. This early stage gives me the freedom to explore different directions and colour palettes, shaping both the emotional impact of the moment and the story being told.
For “Mansell x Senna”, I chose to depict the pair driving toward the viewer, using a strong, balanced composition and bold colours to heighten the moment's significance. A key part of my work is integrating an abstract world into the painting. Here, it was important to introduce a sense of placement and motion through the canvas. I achieved this with contrasting white sweeping lines designed to guide the viewer’s eye and inject a flow. Originally conceived as a single line, this element evolved organically into a bolder, more expressive abstract form.
With this painting, it was all about compositional focus.
Creating a piece that not only draws your eye, but takes you on a journey through the painting.
The Painting
I created this piece in oil on a 1 x 1 metre stretched canvas. The square canvas ratio is one of my favourite formats, offering a powerful, balanced, and confident placement on any collector’s wall.
The use of red was a decision taken during the concept phase, chosen to contrast the Williams while complementing the red and yellow accents in the car and Senna’s suit. This colour choice led to one of the most striking and bold pieces in the collection. Working on the piece was also a rewarding experience, involving not only time in the studio but also moments of live painting at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2025.
The piece balances detailed realism with my signature abstract world, giving the drivers and the car presence on the canvas, alongside the energy and atmosphere of the moment. Colour, light, and composition work together to capture the viewer and transport them into the story of the scene, a staple of all my work.
